Bitcoin miners brace for impact as halving goes live
  + stars: | 2024-04-21 | by ( Mackenzie Sigalos | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +17 min
The technical event is relatively simple: Bitcoin miners get paid in bitcoin to validate transactions, and after 210,000 blocks of transactions are computed and added to the main chain, the reward given to the miners securing bitcoin is 'halved.' The aggregate market cap of the 14 U.S.-listed bitcoin miners tracked by JPMorgan analysts declined 28% over the first half of April to $14.2 billion, reaching year-to-date lows. Some have billed the 2024 bitcoin halving as a seminal moment for the mining sector. Marathon, along with other mining firms, has begun diversifying its business model into ancillary operations beyond purely bitcoin mining. Sullivan continued, "Bitcoin mining sites can only be repurposed if they meet the attributes that are required for HPC.

One derivative play on Nvidia is a buying opportunity that can more than double from current prices, according to Benchmark. Analyst Mark Palmer initiated coverage of Bitdeer Technologies with a buy rating in a report out Thursday. That view is driven in part by a key partnership with Nvidia that will help Bitdeer expand into artificial intelligence. In November, Bitdeer announced it will be a preferred cloud service provider for Nvidia 's partner network. But Benchmark's $13 price target implies the stock could nearly double from Wednesday's closing price of $6.74 per share.

CNN —A former Trump administration official who was shot in a deadly string of carjackings in Washington, DC, earlier last week died Saturday, the DC Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement. Michael Gill, 56, was inside his vehicle parked at Mount Vernon Square on Monday when the suspect, identified as 28-year-old Artell Cunningham, got inside the vehicle and shot him, police said. Cunningham shot Vasquez dead and fled the scene in his vehicle before officials say he conducted two more carjacking incidents in Prince George’s County the following morning, MPD Executive Assistant Chief Jeffery Carroll said at a Tuesday news conference. Cunningham was eventually stopped and was fatally shot by two New Carrollton police officers in Maryland on Tuesday. Before his death, Michael Gill worked for the Housing Policy Council, a real estate trade association, for several years, the organization’s president, Ed DeMarco, confirmed in a statement.

AMD stock spiked more than 8% Wednesday, a day after the company beat top and bottom-line earnings estimates and gave a promising 2024 forecast for its AI chip business. The chipmaker posted an earnings per share of 70 cents, adjusted, narrowly beating the LSEG, formerly Refinitiv, estimate of 68 cents per share. Wall Street analysts like AMD's prospects in the AI market, which is currently dominated by Nvidia . Still, AMD is one of only a handful of companies capable of making high-powered graphics processing units (GPUs) that power AI models. Analysts at Raymond James lowered their price target from $145 to $125 but kept AMD as a "strong buy" largely due to its AI business.

REUTERS/Robert Galbraith/File PhotoAug 8 (Reuters) - Nvidia (NVDA.O) announced a new configuration on Tuesday for its advanced artificial intelligence chips that is designed to speed generative AI applications. The configuration is optimized to perform AI inference functions that effectively power generative AI applications such as ChatGPT. Nvidia's Grace Hopper Superchip design stitches together one of the company's H100 graphics processing units (GPU) with an Nvidia-designed central processor. The underlying AI models that power the generative AI apps that are capable of producing human-like text and images continue to grow in size. Nvidia plans to sell two flavors: a version that includes two chips that customers can integrate into systems, and a complete server system that combines two Grace Hopper designs.

The German luxury automaker will fully integrate what Tesla calls the North American Charging Standard (NACS) in its electric vehicle line-up, it said on Friday. In November, Tesla CEO Elon Musk invited other EV makers to build vehicles that could use Tesla charging ports. In May, Ford (F) announced its vehicles will gain access to Tesla’s vast EV charging network. “With the development of Mercedes-Benz’s new North American High-Power Charging Network, we are ready to redefine the electric vehicle charging experience,” Andrew Cornelia, CEO of Mercedes-Benz HPC North America said in a statement. While the possibilities are still coming into focus, Needham sees at least one near-term opportunity for investors, and a stock to play it. In the near term, the infrastructure level is the place for investors, and Applied Digital offers an interesting opportunity, according to the firm. "We have been excited about Applied Digital, which is a bitcoin mining hosting provider that recently entered into hosting high performance compute (HPC) and AI," Needham analyst John Todaro told CNBC by email. "Given the similar power density requirements between bitcoin mining and hosting AI applications, we believe there is an attractive opportunity for Applied Digital and potentially other mining hosting providers to enter this space." It's still early days for both crypto and AI individually, although the AI hype may have better longevity from having been around for longer.
On Tuesday at its developer conference GTC, Nvidia unveiled CUDA Quantum, a platform for building quantum algorithms using popular classical computer coding languages C++ and python. "CUDA Quantum will do the same for quantum computing, enabling domain scientists to seamlessly integrate quantum into their applications and gain access to a new disruptive computing technology," said Tim Costa, Nvidia's director of HPC and quantum. One difference, Costa said, is while CUDA is proprietary, CUDA Quantum is open source and was developed with input from many quantum computing companies. Nvidia also launched a new hardware system called DGX Quantum to connect the quantum computer with classical computers. "We see more and more demand to integrate these quantum computers with standard computers," said Itamar Sivan, co-founder and CEO of Quantum Machines.

But she thinks investors will see the relative resilience of the company's brands and its earnings compounder distinction as more important.
